GMB Welcomes £5.05 Minimum Wage Rise

The GMB - Britain's General Union - has welcomed the increase from £4.85 to £5.05 in October announced by the Prime Minister today. The rate for 18-21 year olds will rise from £4.10 to £4.25.

GMB General Secretary Kevin Curran said:

"It's refreshing to see Labour stepping up its work for the lowest paid, many of them women with family commitments.

"What a contrast to the years before 1997 when millions were being kept on the breadline or in the dole queue by the Tories. And GMB members won’t be fooled by hollow words from the Liberals, the caring, sharing people who said the last rise in the minimum wage was "dangerous". How can fairer pay be dangerous?

"Breaking the £5 barrier is excellent news. Breaking a £6 barrier in a third term will be even better. That's what research for the GMB by MORI has shown most British people want. The Minimum Wage could then become a living wage, and that's surely what we all need to work towards. Voting Labour can really help the lowest paid. Anything else is a vote to return hard working people to poverty pay."
